How the calculations work
Mean
Add all values and divide by how many values there are.
Median
Sort the values and find the middle. For an even count, average the two middle values.
Mode
The most frequent value or values. If every value occurs once, this tool reports no mode.
Weighted average
Divide the sum of each value × its weight by the total weight.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use negative values and decimals?
Yes. You can also enter scientific notation such as 1e3. Geometric mean is provided only for strictly positive values.
What is the difference between sample and population deviation?
Population deviation divides squared deviations by n. Sample deviation divides by n − 1 and needs at least two values.
Are my numbers uploaded?
This calculator processes numbers locally and does not send them to a server. Other website services have their own privacy practices.
How are quartiles and outliers calculated?
Quartiles use linear interpolation at positions (n − 1) × p. Outliers fall below Q1 − 1.5 × IQR or above Q3 + 1.5 × IQR. Other tools may use a different quartile convention.

How to Calculate an Average
- Enter your numbers. Separate values with commas, spaces or new lines.
- Add weights if needed. Enter one weight for each value to calculate a weighted average.
- Review the results. Check the average, other statistics and the explanation of each calculation.
For example, the arithmetic mean of 10, 20 and 30 is 20: add the values to get 60, then divide by 3. Select Try example in the calculator to explore a worked dataset.
Frequently Asked Questions About Averages
Is average the same as mean?
In everyday use, “average” often means the arithmetic mean. In statistics, other measures—including the median and mode—can also describe a typical value. The best choice depends on your data and what you want to learn.
Can an average be misleading?
Yes. A few unusually large or small values can strongly affect the arithmetic mean. Compare the mean with the median and check the range to better understand your data.
Can I average percentages?
You can use a simple mean when percentages represent equally sized groups. When group sizes differ, use a weighted average with the group sizes as weights. Averaging percentage growth over time requires a different approach, such as a compound average return.
How do I calculate an average speed?
Divide the total distance travelled by the total time taken. A simple average of individual speeds can give the wrong result when the time spent at each speed differs.
Do you store the numbers I enter?
The calculators process your inputs in your browser and do not upload those numbers to a server. Other website services, if enabled, may have separate data practices described in the Privacy Policy.
